The Abomination of Desolation

24:15 “So when you see the abomination of desolation 18  – spoken about by Daniel the prophet – standing in the holy place (let the reader understand),

[5:18]  1 tn Grk “For I tell.” Here an explanatory γάρ (gar) has not been translated.

[5:18]  2 tn Grk “Truly (ἀμήν, amhn), I say to you.”

[5:18]  3 tn Grk “Not one iota or one serif.”

[5:18]  sn The smallest letter refers to the smallest Hebrew letter (yod) and the stroke of a letter to a serif (a hook or projection on a Hebrew letter).

[7:11]  4 tn The participle ὄντες (ontes) has been translated concessively.

[7:11]  5 sn The provision of the good gifts is probably a reference to the wisdom and guidance supplied in response to repeated requests. The teaching as a whole stresses not that we get everything we want, but that God gives the good that we need.

[11:11]  6 tn Grk “Truly (ἀμήν, amhn), I say to you.”

[11:11]  7 sn After John comes a shift of eras. The new era is so great that the lowest member of it (the one who is least in the kingdom of God) is greater than the greatest one of the previous era.

[12:32]  8 tn Grk “it will be forgiven him.”

[12:32]  9 tn Grk “it will not be forgiven him.”

[12:32]  sn Whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. This passage has troubled many people, who have wondered whether or not they have committed this sin. Three things must be kept in mind: (1) the nature of the sin is to ascribe what is the obvious work of the Holy Spirit (e.g., releasing people from Satan’s power) to Satan himself; (2) it is not simply a momentary doubt or sinful attitude, but is indeed a settled condition which opposes the Spirit’s work, as typified by the religious leaders who opposed Jesus; and (3) a person who is concerned about it has probably never committed this sin, for those who commit it here (i.e., the religious leaders) are not in the least concerned about Jesus’ warning.

[12:50]  10 tn The pleonastic pronoun αὐτός (autos, “he”) which precedes this verb has not been translated.

[13:19]  11 sn Interestingly, the synoptic parallels each use a different word for Satan here: Mark 4:15 has “Satan,” while Luke 8:12 has “the devil.” This illustrates the fluidity of the gospel tradition in often using synonyms at the same point of the parallel tradition.

[13:19]  12 sn The word of Jesus has the potential to save if it germinates in a person’s heart, something the devil is very much against.

[14:36]  13 tn Grk “asked that they might touch.”

[16:24]  14 tn Grk “to come after me.”

[16:24]  15 tn This translation better expresses the force of the Greek third person imperative than the traditional “let him deny,” which could be understood as merely permissive.

[16:24]  16 sn To bear the cross means to accept the rejection of the world for turning to Jesus and following him. Discipleship involves a death that is like a crucifixion; see Gal 6:14.

[23:3]  17 tn Grk “for they say and do not do.”

[24:15]  18 sn The reference to the abomination of desolation is an allusion to Dan 9:27. Though some have seen the fulfillment of Daniel’s prophecy in the actions of Antiochus IV (or a representative of his) in 167 b.c., the words of Jesus seem to indicate that Antiochus was not the final fulfillment, but that there was (from Jesus’ perspective) still another fulfillment yet to come. Some argue that this was realized in a.d. 70, while others claim that it refers specifically to Antichrist and will not be fully realized until the period of the great tribulation at the end of the age (cf. Mark 13:14, 19, 24; Rev 3:10).
